Angry Eggs

First off, apologies to those of you on twitter and facebook that had your feed explode with several posts in a day. I was using Tumblr’s awesome “queue” feature and apparently it doesn’t work… or I don’t know how to do use it. What should have been 3 days of posts became three posts within a 24hr period! Yikes. I’ll just manually tell it when to publish from now on. And before you ask, yes, I checked my settings. Supposedly its 1 post per day between 10-2… but one slipped out at like 11 at night followed by another at 10 the next morning.
I’m promise not to flood you anymore.
So with Easter behind us, I finally had time to sit down and color eggs with my son. The weekend just flew by us and I never had to chance to do it. And then we had several rainy days, all of which I had to be out of the house doing things. So while thursday is sunny, it’s still cool outside. We opened the windows to let some sunshine in and I began prepping the eggs.

I put butcher paper down on the table to help protect it from the dyes and used washi tape to secure it. I bought a lot of washi tape right before easter and didn’t use it, I don’t plan to use pink and yellow stripes for my son anytime soon. He saw the paper and thought I was going to color, so he ran to his room and brought some crayons back. He colored the paper while I was getting everything else ready.

So here’s something funny, I like to cook and bake, obviously I share it on here. But here is what I am not good at… boiling an egg. Most of the time my first egg will break, it didn’t, just the second and third. I think my problem was placing them into the boiling water straight from the cold fridge. But personally, I hate boiled eggs, so it does not hurt my feelings if they hate me back. Check out the botched egg, it completely split open.

I got my cups lined up, added the tabs and added some yummy smelling vinegar. Vinegar smells good right? As those little tabs began to pop and sizzle it didn’t take long to draw in Mr Handsome. Here he is now.

He comes by his name honestly, he is very handsome, just don’t tell him, we wouldn’t want it to go to his head. He was super eager to get his hands on those eggs, before I could even show him what we were going to be doing, he had already figured it out. He was sitting there trying grab everything so he could get started. Longest three minutes of his life, it was, waiting for those tabs to dissolve. He quickly discovered that the egg dipping wand could double as a monocle and insisted I take his photo with it. Finally the sounds of sizzling stopped and we could finally begin!

And then we had a little accident, while he was being a bit over zealous and refused to let me aid him, one egg took a fall. He was upset about it, but I assured him we had plenty of eggs and I put it with my dead eggs.

Then came the hard part, waiting for the eggs to dry. I prepped lunch while he literally sat there and watched the eggs dry. He knew what was coming next and could not wait to get his hands on the stickers. He played with his monocle for a little while and then while my back was turned, he got his hands on the stickers.

Don’t worry, the “bad” eggs didn’t get wasted. I discovered today that my little guy actually likes boiled eggs. So I sliced them and he ate them up! Which also means the eggs we are dying won’t go to waste either. He continued stickering in between bites.

He even decided to decorate me, awesome.

Finally the eggs dried and it was time to decorate them. If you hadn’t guessed already, we were making Angry Birds and Bad Piggies, he is obsessed with them. At three, he’s playing and advancing through both games, even the Star Wars edition of Angry Birds. I’m impressed as his mother, but not shocked, my brother and I have been gamers since we were little. I’m pretty sure I learned to play Mario before I was potty trained. I knew he’d want to make Angry Birds, so even though we missed Easter, we had to make them. This was his first time dying eggs, I’m sure he’ll insist we do it every year from now on… until he gets too old for it… can you get too old for coloring eggs? I’m not too old yet!

And there they are! Angry Eggs and Bad Eggs. He was quite clever, I made the green piggy and asked him what color the other one should be because I didn’t have another green egg. He told me to make a blue piggy because that’s an “ice piggy” [which would be Angry Birds Space], seems like he’s going to be just as big as of a geek as his mother.
We may have missed the holiday, but we did not let the chance to spend time together pass us by.
